Genesis: A Rant

This is an excerpt from an impassioned email that I wrote to a friend, it's not quite a complete thought, yet, I would love to hear your comments...

-This is all I'm saying. Clearly scientist can show us good evidence that the Earth is billions of years old, that all life on Earth has one ancestor, that the universe is who-knows-how old and started with a big-bang. But what scientists never take into account, even the vast majority of believing ones, is the eye witness testimony of the person who was not only there, but actually did the whole thing to begin with, the person of Jesus Christ.

God said, through the prophet Moses, that He made the whole Earth, and everything on it, including all life, (which of course includes man) in six days. If those words are not to be trusted, then God is useless to me. If I cannot trust the very first words that are shared by God in His Holy Scriptures, then which ones can I trust.

But let us say for a moment that it is not a literal story, but just a story, telling us about God's character and lovingkindness. Well, then you have to make a choice I am not as quick to make, at what point does Genesis become literal?

Clearly, according to this new wisdom, (which is really no wisdom at all) the creation story is not literal. Obviously, this is the very thing in question. But, if chapter one in not intended to be literal, what of chapter two? In chapter two we get a close up account of when God created man. But that took place on day six, so we can assume that that also is not literal. Building on that assumption, Adam and Eve are not literal figures in the history of the world, and with that we write off chapter three as well. If we all descended, or ascended, I guess, which ever, from a common ancestor the concept of a single couple in a special place somewhere is down right irrational. So Adam and Eve were never literally tempted by anyone. Which really up to this point, is not that big of a deal, it's just a story, I can deal with that. But of course, if Adam and Eve are not literal, then neither are their children. Cain, Abel and Seth and such.

What are we up to? Oh yes, chapter six. The flood. Well, we have already ruled out Noah, by extension of genealogy. He was somebody's kid that was somebody's kid, so on and so on who was Adam's son. Which makes our job easy, because that is a long story. Now we are up to chapter eleven, not bad. Who would really believe a story like the flood anyway, it is utterly impossible for water to cover the entire Earth. Where did it come from, where did it go?

So the tower of Babel falls once again, lost in the fact that it was populated by the descendants of Noah and his children. Which leads us up to Abram, the Father of the Chosen Ones of God. Let us assume that up to this point it was just a story that leads us to Abram. I will not go as far to entertain that Abram is not a literal figure, that would be really crazy.

So we are left with eleven chapters of Genesis on the block, by way of rational scientific theory.

We are left with one little problem... Luke. Luke is considered one of the best historians of ancient times, his account of the Gospel is, from a historical perspective, flawless. In his account, around the end of the third chapter he gives a great genealogy that starts with Joseph, Jesus' earthly father and ends with "Seth was the son of Adam and Adam was the son of God."

This is why it is so important to have Genesis as our foundation. A story we can trust and believe in. Genesis is the foundation of all of the Scripture that comes after. If it cannot be trusted there is absolutely no reason to trust anything that follows.

That Was Fun

Well the play is over. Stephanie and I thought that when the play was finally over we would be able to get back to some nice quiet evenings. That we would actually get to go to bed at a decent hour; after spending countless hours, especially during the last week leading up to the play, staying up all night rehearsing. Six days after the final performance and it is a no go. We just cannot seem to get our schedule under control. This weekend we have a wedding to go to. The marriage of Anna Newell to Matthew Hess. It takes place in Pennsylvania, about two and one half hours away. We are there the night before, on Friday, for the dress rehearsal (MORE REHEARSALS!?!) Next morning -the big show! Which will be great, I'm definitely very excited. But then there is the reception, oh wait, not the reception but the receptions. There are two of them, one that immediately follows the wedding in Pennsylvania and then another, two and one half hours away in CNY! It starts at six. It will be a busy day, me thinks. We will have a lot of fun though. A great friend is getting married, my wife and I love road trips and staying in bad motels, all and all, it should be good.

As for the play itself? It was pretty great. Mike (Keville) played the part of a murdering psychopath, his first "evil" role, and it was pretty great. He was southern and back woods, two things I think he wishes he was in real life. Matt Hess (as mentioned above) also played a crazy murderer, (think Natural Born Killers with a mullet) it was hysterical! My wife and I played husband and wife, turns out we were not that good at it... just kidding! She is a natural, very good at emoting. So, if you missed our play, shame on you. Maybe, if you are lucky, one day you will get a chance to see it, on "tape," or with a different cast, as for us, the curtain has already closed.

PSA

Just to eliminate any confusion, we are NOT doing the Wizard of Oz, it's just that we are from Chittenango, the birthplace of L. Frank Baum, the author.

The play is actually a Greggory Ellstrom original, The Laughing Man, it's a thriller in two acts. The show times are 730pm July 18 & 19, hope to see you there!

Just a Note...

OK, so I know that I said that I'd start blogging again, here's the deal, for the next two weeks we have rehearsals for the play we're doing. So I hope that I don't stop blogging before I even start up again...

What to look for in the near Future: An auto-biography of the last year or so, since I stopped blogging last, just to bring everyone up to date. OK, that's all for now.

Here and Back Again!

I decided today that I was going to start blogging again... it's been exactly one year to the day since I have last blogged, although it was totally a coincidence that I chose today to begin again.

My wife (oh yeah, I'm married, just in case you did not hear) told me the other day that she likes it when I do the whole blogging thing, which came as a surprise to me. I apparently am not good at telling her my feelings, but I can, it would seem, write them down pretty well. So in the interest of my marriage... here we go again.

Truth: Stranger Than Fiction

The story you're about to read is real. No names or places have been changed, for any reason...

So the other day I got this phone call, I was at work, so it just went to voice mail. The message went a little something like this:

"Hey Scott, this is Mary Parrot, I was just calling you because we're having a surprise party for Shawn. I just wanted to let you know for ideas who we should call to invite. I talked to Andy and your mom..."

...and it went on to say the time and place and such. Now you might be thinking one of two things, either: (1) So what, where's this story going, or (2) So what, Shawn's mom, who's new last name might be Parrot is throwing him a surprise party... hold tight.

Meanwhile, I call up my brother, and I ask him if Shawn's mom's last name is now Parrot, he told me otherwise. I tell him about the message and he has no idea what I'm talking about.

So it gets a little thicker.

I called my mom, no answer, but Andy told me that he did a little later and that she didn't get a call either.

WHO ARE YOU?!?

So then I realize, she called me on my cell phone. I have her number!

I called her, the following conversation ensued:

-Hello?

-Hello, is Mary there?

-May I ask who's speaking?

-It's Scott.

-Oh! I thought I recognized the number. How are you?

-Well, here's the deal, I don't know who you are.

-It's Mary Parrot, So-and-So's girlfrind, dip-sh!t!

-Uh... I don't know who that person is either. Listen, you left this message on my phone about a party, but I don't know who you are.

-Well, I got this number from Such-and Such's mom so she might have given me the wrong number, that's a weird coincidence that your name is Scott too.

-No, that's only a little coincidence, my brother's name is Andy too. And also, we have a friend named Shawn.

-NO WAY!

-Yup.

-Wait! Did you grow up and live in Liverpool?

-Nope, I grew up and lived in Lakeport

-Wow, weird.

-Yeah, and also, Shawn's mom's name is Mary.

-That's so weird...

-Yeah, her name is Mary Eagle.

-Wow! Okay, well tell your mom sorry about all the fuss.

-Oh no, don't worry about it, have fun at your party!

-Thanks, bye

-Have a great night, bye.

So I called my brother back to tell him that the mystery is solved and that we can all once again sleep at night, except that there is apparently someone else living our lives, only in Liverpool.

Krinkled Newsletters

Hey all!

New Videos
The Krinkle Kuts have posted a bunch of videos on You Tube for your listening enjoyment! They're more practice videos like the last one, so the lighting is a little off and other assorted technical difficulties. These videos show a little bit of the variety of the sounds that we are trying to develop. Including " Save Me" with Stephanie Amidon on lead vocals (unfortunately Scott's mic was up a little too loud and he over powers her voice when he comes in... so contribute to the "we need equipment, like monitors" fund, thank you).

Help Spread the Word
We hope you enjoy the music we can provide to you. And if you have an event, or you know a place that needs live music let us know, we'd be happy to play!

**BIG NEWS**
The Krinkle Kuts are looking for a new band name!!! We want to come up with a name that might be taken a little more seriously by local Church organizations. So if you have any ideas, and if we choose the name you submit, you could win tickets to all the shows that we do FOR LIFE! So don't miss out on this opportunity of a life time!

FIRST REAL GIG...
The Krinkle Kuts went on our first real gig this past Saturday night and it was a total blast! We were graciously invited to play some of our songs and lead worship for a small group of Jr/Sr.high school students up at High Land Forest. It was great! There wasn't any electricity so we played totally unplugged and by candle light. We also had a great time just hanging out with the kids, who were just crazy! It was an awesome opportunity to grow closer as a band and share a our hearts though a music style these kids hadn't really heard before.

Thank you all for your continued support!
Peace be upon you!

Come On Get Krinkled!

You won't believe this, but last night we had a lot of firsts for The Krinkle Kuts:

  1. The entire group was together all at once, including the addition of our two new lady vocalists: Stephanie Amidon and Martina Durfee
  2. We all signed our first autographs as Krinkles, some HS student was overwhelmed and had us sign the back of his shirt
  3. We had our first "tribute" song played. There was a man there that played the "first song I ever heard The Krinkle Kuts preform.

So, needless to say, we were all pretty excited. If you haven't seen us preform yet, we usually play most Tuesday nights at UCF's Westcott Open Mic Night. If you can't do that, check out our videos at youtube.com/thekriklekuts and don't forget to subscribe so you'll always know when new ones come out!!

So? ...where am I?

I don't know where I am these days. Not really anywhere. I guess I just forgot about making time to write in a blog lately, which I guess is okay, no one really reads it anymore anywho.

So? ...where am I. Well, I got a new job at a dairy plant, got a new girlfriend (well, she's almost new), and I got a new service to write all my thoughts on, Facebook. But I think I'm going to start writing on here a little more. I'm going to finish posting pictures of all my PEZ dispensers and all that stuff I used to do. So, if your still out there, which I doubt you are, then look me up once or twice a month, I'll be posting. Oh, and I hope you had a Merry Christmas, I know I did!

SBE #7: The Will of Our Lord

We are here to do the Will of the Lord. Like Jesus, we must forsake our own wills for that of His. We can say, "if it is possible let this cup pass," but we must be also willing to say, "not my will, yours." The Will of Our Lord is rarely easy, but the reward is always sweet. The problem we face as man is that we are so temporal, so here-and-now. If we are to be rewared to do the Will, we want our come-up-ins NOW. Having no experience with eternity, we find it hard to wait for it to come.

Two flaws in thought:

First: Doing the Will should always be reward enough. Knowing that we are doing exactly what Our Father wants should be bliss. Can we know what exactly is the Will, well, I think so. We can especially know what it is not. Call on Abba for His Will, and He will reveal it to you. Spend time in His Word, in His Presence, kneeling before His Throne. He wants us to do His Will, should He not let us know what it is?

Second: Why should we expect a reward in the first place? If the Sovereign of the universe tell us to do this or that, then we should, no questions asked, no reward expected. No one ever got a "you paid your taxes" bonus. I never heard of anyone getting a prize for not speeding. So why the expectation?

FUSION!

We've started a new Bible study ministry at CrossRoads Community Church(CCC), here in Chittenango. It's called Fusion. It's pretty rad. The Bible study is inter-congregational, the pastor team includes, but not limited to, Pastors Mick Keville and Gavin Carrier of CCC, Pastor Dan Maxfield of the First Baptist, and Pastor Dennis Doer of the First Presbyterian. Our target audience are the twenty-somethings though the mid thirty-somethings. Of course, however, no one would be turned away at the door.

Personally I am very excited about this whole adventure. Kim, Martina, Matt, Clayton and I have been working very hard to get this program under way. We've spent countless hours developing everything from a name (which was almost "Hunt For the Red Truth-tober") to coming up with mission and vision statements. We have also worked hard just trying to get the logistics of the whole thing down. None of us have really run a program like this, so we're finding out how all this works while we go; setting ambiance, setting the order of events, choosing which songs to sing, making power point slides. There is a lot more to it then you might think. Right now were struggling with getting some people to volunteer to watch the wee little ones that some of our friends might have. It makes it difficult for "breeders" to come if we cannot offer child care.

So, I hope that if you can come to Fusion you will. It's a great time with good teaching, good fellowship, and good worship.

See you there!
